What to avoid
Don’t get stung by firms offering services based on popular
myths. Here are three of the most common examples:-
“Submit
your site daily to over 400 search engines”
We say: once your site is listed in a search engine, you don’t need to resubmit it. The search engine will automatically crawl every page on your site regularly anyway. As for 400 search engines, most people only use four or five major search engines to do their searches – the rest are so obscure as to be virtually irrelevant.
“Guaranteed top ten placement”
We say: rankings are constantly changing. They're based on the relative strength of all the competing sites, the number of sites competing for any given keywords and on the different ranking criteria of each search engine. No company can guarantee to manipulate all these factors unless they’re using paid-for advertisement listings. A better approach is to acknowledge realistic expectations of what might be achieved within your budget and depending on how competitive your business area is.
“We will monitor hundreds of keywords and phrases for your site”
We say: monitoring alone is useful to check your rankings but it does nothing to improve them. Many of these services just send you an automated report without doing any work on your site whatsoever. Is your provider actively working to improve your rankings or are they just blinding you with statistics?
